ADVENTUROUS COUPLE

SOAKING UP THE ATMOSPHERE - Phyllis and Dick Herrmann enjoy a sunset dinner in Jensen Beach, Fla.

EUREKA- Phyllis (Ruder) Hermann's wanderlust was nurtured growing up in the Woodford County seat in the 1960s and '70s, partly by her involvement with the American Field Service (AFS) student exchange program. But, she always had a fascination for foreign places and diverse cultures.

That penchant for adventure continues as she and her husband of 39 years, Dick Hermann, circumnavigate the eastern half of North America via a system of waterways known as the Great Loop.

"My husband is a wonderful captain and I would sail into anything with him," she stated.

The couple recently docked their 37-foot recreational trawler along the Illinois River. They visited area friends and family members, including her brothers, Bruce Ruder and Bryant Ruder, both of Eureka. A large part of the family's catching up centered on the Great Loop voyage that launched in February from Fort Myers, Fla. They purchased their boat back in 2012 and paid it all off two years later.
