BELLFLOWER– W. David Beckenholdt, 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, at his home in Newport, Ore.
He was born April 6, 1929, in Bellflower, the son of Jacob and Bertha Hender Beckenholdt.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Beckenholdt; two daughters, Nancy (David) Altshue, Bloomington and Margie (Randy) White, Farmer City; two stepsons, Charles Ford and Richard Ford; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and three siblings.
Dave obtained a master’s degree in journalism, but felt the draw of his upbringing on an Illinois farm. He turned to farming in Missouri and later returned to take over the family’s 1883 farm near Farmer City as a third generation member. David and his wife were active in Christian Science. The couple was involved with the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and University of Connecticut, Storrs. They enjoyed traveling around the U.S., as well as Canada and Europe. He later retired to the Oregon coast, where he enjoyed the mild weather and ocean view. Dave’s wit, humor, gracious manner and care for others won over everyone he met. His gentle, sweet nature will be missed.
