FLANAGAN - Despite attempting two more shots (21) than turnovers committed (19) and taking just one field goal try the entire fourth quarter, Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland surprised Fieldcrest in Wednesday's regional 42-34. The Knights (19-7) had won the three regular season meetings by a combined 57 points.
Fieldcrest got out to a 9-0 lead and held F-C-W (10-19) over six minutes without a point.
Later in the first half, the Knights went over eight minutes sans a hoop, as the Falcons went on a 15-0 run to wipe out a 13-4 deficit.
“We started off well in the first (quarter) then we hit a wall,” commented Fieldcrest coach Mitch Neally. “We could not score in the second. We took some shots that I liked, but we did not make them. Sometimes, it felt like there was a lid on the basket.”
Jadyn Mitchell, who poured in 27 points in Tuesday's overtime win over Kewanee, finished with 14 points. Madi Hock and Emma Lorton tied for team-high honors with nine points for Fieldcrest.
Seneca eliminated the hosts with a 56-36 victory in Friday night's title game.
Notes: The Knights fell one win short of a second consecutive 20-win season. F-C-W also overcame a nine-point deficit against the Boilermakers in a 56-55 final. The Fieldcrest duo of Alyx Carls and Lexi Jochums advanced in the three-point shootout competition. They'll shoot in the sectional round on Thursday at Manlius (Bureau Valley), beginning at 5:40, prior to the 7 p.m. final.
