CROSS COUNTRY

Eureka girls, Johnson advance: Eureka qualified for next weekend's state finals at the Elmwood/Brimfield Sectional Saturday at Maple Lane Country Club in Elmwood. Emma Argo won the individual race, as the Hornets took third as a team behind Williamsville and Monticello. Kyle Johnson (12th) moved on from the boys' side. The hosts (96) edged Deer Creek-Mackinaw by two points for team honors.

FOOTBALL

Eureka 7, Byron 28: Jake Bachman hauled in a 72-yard touchdown pass from Jonah Hahn off a halfback option play in Friday night's opening round playoff tilt. The host Tigers (10-0) led 21-0 before the Hornets (6-4) got on the board in the final quarter. Austin Schrock's point after kick was his 31st, shattering the single season program record he set last year at 30.

SOCCER

Squad cited by IHSSCA: Roanoke-Benson/Eureka was named the top sportsmanship team in section VIII by the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association. Under head coach Dennis Kennell and his assistant coach and son Michael Kennell, the co-op posted an 11-9-1 record this past season.
