Wiegand advances to semis: Eureka's Asher Wiegand defeated Owen Gulley of LeRoy 4-1 in a Friday quarterfinal round match at 126 pounds in the Olympia Sectional. Conner McDonald (170) and Joel Baer (220) each won a match and are still alive in the wrestleback portion.
Wiegand onto state: After losing just his second match in 37 tries, Asher Wiegand of Eureka picked up two victories to qualify for the state finals at 126. His 2-1 win in the third place match over Clinton's Tyler Harris was the 100th of Wiegand's prep career. State competition starts Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the State Farm Center on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana.
Beardstown 35, Eureka 59: Natalie Bardwell poured in 25 points for the Hornets (26-3) in Wednesday's Havana Regional. Tessa Leman added 21 and in the process vaulted over Kalla Gold to become the program's all-time leader in points.
Heyworth 52, Fieldcrest 68: Cameron Grandy led four players into double figures with 19 points for the Knights (16-10, 6-6) in Friday's Heart of Illinois Conference matchup.
Eureka 43, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 63: Keith Walder netted 13 points for the Hornets (11-12, 6-6) on Friday versus the league-leading Falcons.
Roanoke-Benson 49, Midland 54: Jake Weber scored 15 points, as the Rockets (14-10, 5-2) blew a 19-point second quarter advantage in Friday's Tri-County Conference road tilt.
R-B 46, Flanagan-Cornell 49: Jordan Huschen tallied 20 points for the Tuesday guests.
Duo picks colleges: Seniors Jake Bachman (Eureka) and Cameron Grandy (Fieldcrest) have decided where they'll play on the next level. Bachman signed a national letter of intent Wednesday afternoon to suit up for Division II McKendree University in Lebanon, located 50 miles east of Belleville. He was recruited as a defensive back. Grandy, who is a quarterback, will sign next week with D-II Missouri Western State, which is based on St. Joseph, a Kansas City suburb.
