ROANOKE - Facing a three-run deficit was no sweat for Roanoke-Benson/Lowpoint-Washburn on Monday in a 9-4 victory over Peoria Christian.
RBLW (12-11, 7-3) scored a pair of runs courtesy back-to-back suicide squeeze bunts from Reed Aeschleman and Jason Tallyn in the bottom of the fifth inning.
“They’ve bought into it enough to do it ever since they were freshmen,” said RBLW coach Wade Hunter of the small ball philosophy. “They know how important it is.”
Jarrett Bline had a two-run double and a two-run single for the Tri-County Conference hosts. On the mound, Daniel Kennell (4-4) went six and two-thirds and gave up just two earned runs to get the win. He walked one and struck out five.
Nick Nielson hit a two-run homer for the Chargers (7-10, 5-6), who received two hits from Justin Post.
Notes: Ottawa Marquette secured a fifth consecutive league crown with an 8-2 decision Monday at Henry.
