EUREKA - Tremont jumped out to a 14-point first quarter lead en route to a 65-46 victory over Heart of Illinois Conference rival Eureka Tuesday night.
The Turks (16-7, 8-3) made nine of 21 three-pointers, including four of seven in the opening stanza, which propelled them to a 20-6 cushion.
“We wanted to try to do that,” said Eureka coach Tim Meiss of attempting to make the Turks fire up twos and not threes. “I thought they shot the ball well. We were more concerned about the penetration than the three. It’s hard to fall behind them. They can score from a lot of spots.”
Luke Barrow led the visitors with 15 points. Keegan Zimmerman's 11 points paced the Hornets (10-9, 5-3), who saw a five-game winning streak end.
Notes: Coming into Tuesday, six of the 14 HOIC teams were separated by one and a half games. On Friday, the top two clubs meet as Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (19-3, 8-1) goes to Colfax to face Ridgeview (20-3, 7-2). The McLean County traveling trophy will be on the line, as GCMS claimed that on Tuesday. This will be the third meeting between the two. The Falcons won the first time in the Monticello Hoopla tournament, while Ridgeview got round two in the finals of the McLean Co. tourney.
