Question: Why is it “Unit” 5, but “District” 87?

Answer: Bloomington’s school district is one of Illinois’ charter (original) school systems and in the beginning, all school districts in Illinois were called “districts.” Early in the 20th century, the state Legislature changed the name to “units” and thus that is how the Normal-based school district is known as a unit.
