QUESTION: The 104th McLean County Basketball Tournament begins tonight and features, among others, teams called Mustangs (Ridgeview), Knights (Fieldcrest), Minutemen (Lexington), Panthers (LeRoy) and Hornets (Heyworth). Once upon a time — in the 1950s — it also had Indians, Dragons, Bulldogs, Demons, Colts and Comanches. Can you identify which McLean County high schools were those?
ANSWER: Now lost to consolidation, the tourney once featured a host of other high schools, including the Arrowsmith Indians, Bellflower Dragons, Cropsey Bulldogs, Danvers Dragons, Downs Demons, McLean Colts, Saybrook Comanches and Stanford Indians. (Our thanks to Bill Kemp at the McLean County Museum of History for all the ex-schools and nicknames.)
