Question: Something that truly changed the world occurred exactly 140 years ago today in Bloomington-Normal. Do you know what that was?
Answer: The first telephone call was made on Dec. 5, 1877, from one building to another, when a call was placed from the Pantagraph building to the Western Union Telegraph building at 202 N. Center (today an office building just south of the downtown CVS store). That’s only about 275 feet, but it was a monumental moment for communication. By 1900, an estimated 1,200 telephones were in B-N, leading all the way up to today when there’s a phone in just about every pocket or purse.
