Our world appears to be on the verge of spiraling out of control. The cold war is heating up. Global terrorism is on the rise. Nature’s fury increases in intensity, with devastating effect. Economic pressures are a constant concern. Political issues divide us. Racial tensions threaten to rip the social fabric of our nation apart. Understandably, many people face the New Year with fear and trepidation. Some don’t know what to do. Most feel powerless to resolve such perplexing problems.
As people of faith, however, we can be proactive, rather than reactionary. The Word of God proclaims there is hope, no matter how hopeless our world may seem. We can approach this New Year with faith, not fear. The salvation of God is, in fact, offered to all the peoples and nations of the earth through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (See Revelation 7:9 and Ephesians 2:11-17).
The spirit of the Antichrist deceives people, divides us, and denies that Jesus Christ is Lord. The evil one seeks to destroy humanity (See 1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; and 2 John 1:7). The Spirit of God, however, seeks peace. The Lord destroys hostility and brings humanity together as one in Christ. Jesus preached this message of peace. Then, on the cross, Jesus made peace possible by reconciling us to God and one another. Jesus is the answer!
Yet many seek to resolve the problems of their lives and of our world in their own way. We who believe, however, must not respond as unbelievers. We need not recoil in fear. We can be proactive in prayer. We can proclaim the peace of God that is available to all in Christ. We can proclaim reconciliation as we point others to Christ.
Reconciliation between God and people as well as between individuals, cultures and nations is possible through Jesus Christ. Due to his work on the cross, Jesus is our reconciliation and our peace. Be proactive throughout this new year. Pray for peace. Embrace the peace of God. Then, as you live in peace with yourself and God, seek also to live in peace with others. Have a happy and blessed new year!
