Marshalls said Thursday it plans to open a store in the Twin Cities.

BLOOMINGTON — A Marshalls department store is expected to open next year in the Twin Cities.

"Right now we don't have too many details, but we anticipate that a new Marshalls store will be coming to the Normal-Bloomington area in the fall of 2019," said Katie Babb, spokesman for TJX Companies Inc.

Babb declined to provide more details on Thursday, including whether the new Marshalls store would be located in Normal or Bloomington.

"When opening new stores, we tend to announce our plans when we believe the time is right to do so, competitively," said Babb. "Generally speaking, it is our best practice not to announce the store opening until close to an intended opening date."

Marshalls will not be located in the Eastland Mall in Bloomington, said Stacey Keating, spokeswoman for CBL Properties Inc., which owns the mall.

Marshalls and Old Navy stores are depicted in a drawing in an M & J Wilkow online brochure showing the redevelopment of the former Hobby Lobby store site at the Shoppes at College Hills in Normal. The Chicago-based real estate company manages the retail center.

Keating said she is unaware that Old Navy, an Eastland tenant, might move.

Hobby Lobby opened on June 25 in its new location in the former Gordman's store at the Shoppes.

Wilkow officials did not respond to Pantagraph requests for comment Thursday.

Normal Mayor Chris Koos said he is not aware of a Marshalls store opening in Normal.

"I knew (Wilkow) was redoing the old Hobby Lobby store and subdividing it.  But as far as tenants, I hadn't heard anything," said Koos.

Marshalls has been looking for a Twin City location for a while, but nobody here has talked to them," said Sally Heffernan, economic development director for Normal. "The town has not had any discussions at all with Marshalls."

Bloomington Communication Manager Nora Dukowitz said the city also has not had any discussions with Marshalls owner TJX.

"Since opening its first store more than 40 years ago, the Marshalls name has become synonymous with off-price shopping," said the company in an email. "Marshalls shoppers can find a surprising selection of high-quality, on-trend, brand name and designer merchandise for men, women and children, footwear, beauty, accessories, and home merchandise — all at prices that wow."

The T.J. Maxx store is located at 2103 N. Veterans Parkway.
