BLOOMINGTON — Grand Cafe West Side is open at 1514 W. Market St., which had been the home of Yen Ching Express for more than 17 years.

The new restaurant offers the same variety of Chinese-American and Filipino foods featured at Grand Cafe Express, 2205 E. Oakland Ave., Bloomington, said co-owner Jimmy Mapugay.

It also features some popular items that had been the mainstay of the original Grand Cafe, which closed last year downtown.

The newest Grand Cafe restaurant seats 40 people and has 10 to 12 employees.

Grand Cafe to open second site on west side

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The drive-through lane will be operational later this week, but only appetizers and other quickly prepared items such as fried rice can be ordered there.  Orders called in at 309-585-4650 can be picked up at the drive-through lane. The restaurant also makes deliveries.

Mapugay and his wife, Kelly, partnered with Adrian Daluz to purchase the original Grand Cafe at 615 N. Main St., in May 2017.

After closing the restaurant for renovations, the trio opened Grand Cafe Express. The plan, Mapugay said at that time, was to give the cooks and staff a place to work while the renovations were done.

But when projected renovation costs at the original restaurant reached $600,000, Mapugay said he started considering other options, including selling or demolishing the downtown site.
