BLOOMINGTON — Plans for four eye care practices to merge into one at a single location on the east side of Bloomington are continuing to move forward, but without Specs Around Town Optical Boutique.
The eyewear boutique has decided to stay at its current location at 317 N. Center St. in downtown Bloomington.
“I love downtown and I love my space,” Specs Around Town owner Julie Kubsch said Friday. “I decided I wanted to keep that independent boutique feel.”
She said the shop will be closed for a while in July to give a bit of a face-lift to the business, which has been in its present location since 1998.
Three ophthalmologists and nine optometrists from Eye Surgical Associates and Eyecare Associates in Bloomington and from McLean County Eye Center and Central Illinois Eye Care in Normal are proceeding with their merger as VisionPoint. They are continuing to see patients at their existing facilities while the new building is being built.

They will begin seeing patients at the new location at 1107 Airport Road on Aug. 6. A public open house is planned there from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14.
Although Specs Around Town is out of the project, current opticians from the four practices will staff an eye wear boutique at VisionPoint as planned.
A ceremonial groundbreaking for the the 28,000-square-foot VisionPoint building took place in August.
The new facility will be used not only for vision, medical and optical care for eye patients, but also for LASIK surgery and minor eye surgical procedures. Cataract surgery will continue to be done at the Eastland Medical Plaza Surgicenter on the OSF St. Joseph campus.
Involved in the merger are Drs. Daniel Brownstone, Catharine Crockett, John Couillard, Jason Dunn, Jeffrey Huettemann, David Landess, Tom Mahafey, Wilson Movic, Eric Norell, Scott Pinter, Kathy Vize and Michelle Willenbring.
