EC widens free tuition program to three high schools

EUREKA – Students at Eureka High School and two others with financial need now have an opportunity to attend Eureka College tuition free. The college has expanded its Uniquely Eureka Promise Program to EHS, Washington H.S. and East Peoria H.S.

“We've long had a strong partnership with those three high schools. They're in our backyard,” said Mac Ingmire, EC’s dean of enrollment management.

The program, announced in 2018, originally applied only to in-state community college graduates with associate's degrees.

“We are evaluating this as we go forward and hope to extend it to other schools,” said Ingmire, but there's no guarantee that will happen.

The program covers any remaining tuition charge after state and federal grants are applied for students who meet the program's requirements.

To be eligible, a high school student must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, be a U.S. citizen for at least one year, a current resident of Illinois and enroll in a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester at EC.

In addition, they must be eligible to receive an Illinois Monetary Award Program grant and federal Pell Grant as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), have a FAFSA Estimated Family Contribution of $1,000 or less and use all federal and state grants each year before EC makes up the difference for tuition cost.

Recipients also must commit to volunteer 40 hours with the college over the four years.

Eligibility requirements for community college transfer students are similar. Those students must have completed an associate's degree from an accredited community college and have a 2.8 cumulative unweighted GPA.

According to Ingmire, 13 community college students from across the state are enrolled at EC as part of the Uniquely Eureka Promise program. The institution's fall enrollment was 512.

“The scholarship opportunity will change the lives of its recipients and we look forward to providing this opportunity for years to come,” said Ingmire.

Admission applications must be submitted by July 1 to be eligible for fall semester. The deadline for spring semester is Dec. 1.
