ROANOKE - It has long been a creed of the military to “leave no man behind.”
That thought has always been in the minds of American Legion members who constantly strive to remember their comrades in arms, both living and dead, along with their service to America.
One of the ways the Legion chooses to never forget is through the Gifts for the Yanks Who Gave program, which was instituted in 1944 to remember hospitalized war veterans. The statewide Legion group has maintained this worthy program continuously since its inception by distributing gifts annually to veteran patients at all of the Veteran's Administration (V.A.) Hospitals and extended care facilities throughout Illinois.
To honor those who served and make sure none are forgotten during the holiday season, Roanoke Post No. 463 will collect donations for the Gifts for the Yanks Who Gave program outside locals businesses later this week on Friday and Saturday.
Donations go toward the purchase of the gifts, some of which will be delivered to those veterans in nursing homes by Legion members. Local veterans have vowed never to forget their compatriots who served the red, white and blue at any point during their lifetimes and one of the ways they hold true to their word is through this esteemed program.
