MINONK – A Woodford County Sheriff's Deputy and a Granville man escaped serious injury early Thursday morning when their vehicles crashed head-on on Interstate 39 near mile marker 27 just northwest of town. According to the Illinois State Police, both were hospitalized and later released.

According to law enforcement, multiple emergency calls were placed in regards to an individual driving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that began to travel south in the northbound lanes near Wenona. Two Woodford County Deputies responded. One was able to slow down the northbound traffic, while the other responded to the SUV. At around 4:17 a.m., the driver, later identified as Stephen Vogler, 69, was traveling at a slow rate of speed. The deputy tried to slow Vogler down, but he hit the squad car head-on. It appears Vogler has a medical condition, which could have played a role in the accident. The deputy has not been identified. Police continue to investigate.
