EUREKA - In a move to override budget action, the Woodford County Board approved payment of dues to the Greater Peoria Economic Development Council (GPEDC) from its contingency fund at its meeting on Jan. 15.
The payment was nixed in the final budget arguments at the board’s regular meeting on Oct. 16 by a six-all vote of the 12 members present as the board finalized its budget for the fiscal year beginning in December. The budget was then set before some board members ended their terms following the November election. Normally, that would have ended the discussion until this summer when the board begins new budget talks.
The action spurred a debate about whether a new board should be tied by actions of a former board for the entire fiscal year.
“This is creating a dangerous precedent,” board member Bryant Kempf commented. “It was brought forward and failed. This is not an emergency; it is not in the budget.”
