EUREKA – Betty W. Garman, 88, died at 7:05 p.m., Sunday, June 16, 2019, at her home in Eureka.
She was born Sept. 2, 1930, in Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of Ben and Sophia Schubach Warnack. She married James A. Garman on March 28, 1956, in Decatur. He survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Steve (Glenda) Garman, Eureka and Jeff (Carol) Garman, Colfax; one daughter, Ann Marie (Edward) Brady, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one son-in-law, Dean Kenyon, Germantown Hills.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one brother, one sister and one granddaughter.
Betty attended Millikin University, Decatur, before she graduated from the St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, as well as a bachelor’s degree in nursing from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. After raising her family as a full-time mother, she worked as a registered nurse (RN) in student health services at Illinois Central College, East Peoria, and at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. Betty was a member of New Castle Bible Church, rural Mackinaw. She volunteered at the Women’s Pregnancy Center in Peoria and at the American Red Cross blood drives in Eureka. In her younger years, she hosted CEF Good News Clubs at her home and also taught a women's Precept Bible Study in Eureka and Washington. Betty served on the Maple Lawn board for 12 years. Her musical love was the violin. Betty gave lessons and played in various orchestras, including the Peoria Pops and Bradley University Chamber Orchestra.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Kevin Sauder officiating. Visitation will take place Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. A private family burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home, Eureka, is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the church or to the Peoria Rescue Ministries-Women’s Pregnancy Center.
