EUREKA – Frederick "Fred" Bechtel, 97, died at 10:25 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, at The Loft in Eureka.
He was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Eureka, the son of Andrew and Frances Kollman Bechtel. He married Ruth M. Schieber on May 25, 1946, in Washington. She died Oct. 12, 2003.
Survivors include one son, Curtis (Phyllis) Bechtel, Greendale, Wis.; one grandson, Chris Bechtel, Greendale and one sister, Dorothy Veach, Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jack Bechtel, and one sister, Joanne Krumholz.
Fred served in the Army Air Corp during World War II from 1942 to 1944. He worked at Libby, McNeil & Libby, Eureka, for 15 years and also farmed in the Eureka area most of his life. Fred was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and American Legion Post No. 466, both of Eureka, and also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Joe Burns officiating. Visitation will take place Friday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow the service in Olio Township Cemetery, Eureka, where military rites will be conducted by Post 466. Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka is in charge of the arrangements.
