MINONK – Mary Elizabeth Fitschen, 89, died Monday, March 11, 2019, at Heritage Health in Minonk.
She was born July 23, 1929, in Streator, the daughter of Lee and Ida Todd Held. She married Lewis H. Fitschen on Sept. 12, 1952, in Washburn. He died Feb. 9, 2001.
Survivors include three daughters, Jayne Fitschen, Bloomington, Joyce (Tom) O’Hallaron, Richmond, Va., and Colleen (Steve) Whisker, Gridley; one son, Tom (Rachelle) Fitsche, Washburn; five grandchildren, Mary O’Hallaron, Encinitas, Calif., Eliana O’Hallaron, Chicago, Emma Whisker, Gridley, Abigail (Conner) Knapp, Normal and Alivia Fitschen, Washburn and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Arthur Held, one sister, Lois Nuske, and one grandson, Jordan Whisker.
In her early years, Mary worked for Caterpillar. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and farm wife. Mary was a member of the Woodford County Home Extension, served as a 4-H leader and as an election judge in Linn Township for many years. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, card games, puzzles and visits from her grandchildren.
Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A private family service will be held at a later date. Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Benson Fire and Ambulance or to OSF Hospice.
