BENSON – Ruth Ellen Thompson, 92, died at 11:45 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, 2018.
She was born Nov. 30, 1925, in rural Benson, the daughter of Norvel Ray and Abbie Sitka Faw Ford. She married Rodney Vigars Thompson on Nov. 30, 1946, in Yuma, Ariz. He died March 8, 2013.
Survivors include two sons, Steven (Teresa) Thompson, Benson and Kevin Thompson, Morton; one daughter, Cynthia (James) Pratt, Washington; four grandchildren, Rebekah (Shawn) Hayes, Joshua (Phyllis) Thompson, Christin (Stephen) O’Bryan and Cathryn Pratt; one adoptive grandson, James Williams; three great-grandchildren, Abigail Hayes, Anna Hayes and Maisy O’Bryan and one sister, Nancy Bradley, Phoenix, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Reuben Ford in infancy and James Ford.
Ruth attended a one-room country school in Linn Township and later graduated from Benson High School in 1943. She attended Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tenn., for a semester. Ruth then worked for ABC Washing Machine Co. during World War II and made artillery shells assisting the war effort. She later worked for the Toluca Garment Factory. Ruth was a member of Benson Baptist Church, Benson, and a lifelong member and former president of the Benson American Legion Post No. 454 Auxiliary. Faith and family always came first for Ruth. She gave testimony of her faith in her Savior the Lord Jesus Christ both by her care for others and her daily words and actions. Ruth was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke with Brian Trennepohl officiating. Visitation will take place Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in Clayton Township Cemetery, Benson.
