Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland 2, Fieldcrest 7: Winning pitcher Derek May supplied three hits for the host Knights (12-10) in Thursday's regional.
Relay highlights preliminaries: Eureka's four by eight of Courtney Heffren, Lexi Grober, Alexi Fogo and Emma Argo turned in the fastest time in state competition Friday at O'Brien Stadium on the Eastern Illinois University campus in Charleston. They were clocked in nine minutes 43 point 28 seconds, which bettered Monticello (9:46.56). The four by four of Katelyn Knapp, Amy Pineda, Tessa Wiegand and Heffren also qualified along with Wiegand (800) and Allison Schrock (pole vault).
Quartets return with medals: Eureka's four by eight of Courtney Heffren, Alexi Fogo, Tessa Wiegand and Emma Argo took third in Saturday's final at EIU, while the four by four of Katelyn Knapp, Amy Pineda, Lexi Grober and Heffren ended up sixth.
Locals qualify: Trent Weldon and Logan Gastman of the Lowpoint-Washburn/Roanoke-Benson co-op took the top two places in the high jump at the Lewistown Sectional on Wednesday. Weldon had the winning clearance of six feet three inches. The Fieldcrest four by eight of Ryan Gochanour, Andy Wiesenhofer, Christian Skaggs and Andrew Gochanour finished under the qualifying standard to advance. The state prelims commence next Thursday morning from EIU.
Hornets buzz to team crown: Bolstered by a program record in the four by four, Eureka captured the Macomb Sectional on Thursday. Eli Steinbeck, Aden Sears, Connor Standish and Micah Senior placed first in 3:20.5. The Hornets' 114 points were five better than Metamora. State prelims are next Friday at O'Brien.
