BOYS' BASKETBALL

Fieldcrest 48, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 49: Derek May fired in 15 points for the Knights (20-9, 7-4) in Wednesday's Heart of Illinois Conference makeup tussle.

Flanagan-Cornell 59, Eureka 56 (overtime): Alex Brittain poured in a career-high 30 points for the Hornets (19-10, 5-6) in league action on Friday night.

Peoria Christian 52, Roanoke-Benson 42: Jake Weber provided 16 points for the Rockets (18-12, 5-4) in the Tri-County Conference matchup Friday evening.

Fisher 54, Fieldcrest 62: Jaxon Cusac-McKay led the way for the HOIC hosts with 16 points on Friday.

Clifton Central 33, Fieldcrest 64: Derek May scored 15 points for the regional hosts, who raced out to a 14-0 lead Tuesday evening.

WRESTLING

Wiegand picks up narrow decision: Asher Wiegand of Eureka edged Walther Christian's Julio Padilla 5-4 Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the state finals in the 126-pound division at the State Farm Center on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana. Cameron Johnson of Aurora Christian handed Wiegand (34-5) a 3-0 defeat in the evening's quarterfinal session. Also in the preliminaries at 106, Eureka's Brayden Peiffer (27-9) was pinned in the second period by Tavius Hosley of Tolono Unity.

Wiegand still in medal contention: Asher Wiegand earned a 3-1 decision over Orion's Ethan Meisenburg during wrestleback action on Friday at SFC, while Brayden Peiffer's stay ended with a 6-5 setback to Julian Decker of Wilmington.

Senior nabs fourth: A pair of victories helped Asher Wiegand place fourth at 126 Saturday at SFC. He defeated Sterling Newman's Will Rude 2-1 in OT and Toledo Cumberland's Rayce Zike 4-1 in an extra session.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Two advance: Lauren Ausmus of Eureka and Roanoke-Benson's Brynn Rossman will participate in state competition in the Country Financial three-point shootout. Both shot Thursday at the sectional. Ausmus sank seven of 15 attempts at Beardstown. Rossman made seven of 15, then converted four of 10 in a tiebreaker to qualify. Rossman is in one A, while Ausmus is part of the two A field. The prelims begin Thursday at 5 p.m. from Illinois State University's Redbird Arena in Normal.

SWIMMING

Brown assists relay: Dalton Brown handled the third (butterfly) leg for the Metamora/El Paso-Gridley/Eureka/R-B co-op, as he was joined by Michael Meinert, Justin Alderson and Noah Nelson to win the 200 medley at Saturday's Normal West Sectional. They won in a time of one minute, 38 point four seconds. The quartet competes in state competition that begins Friday at Winnetka New Trier.
