EUREKA - A 59-38 decision over Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Monday night improved Eureka's Heart of Illinois Conference record to 2-0. The Hornets (6-0) also forced 25 turnovers on the part of the Falcons (3-3).
While the hosts had not played in a week, GCMS last had a game on Nov. 16 so whichever squad shook off the cobwebs quicker would have the advantage.
“On top of that, we did not have school so I was nervous to be honest with you,” added Eureka coach Jerry Prina. “I felt like we got a couple of layups early that took some of the pressure off of them.”
Eureka's Natalie Anderson paced all scorers with 23 points. GCMS received 10 points each from Makenzi Biefeldt and Hannah Hathaway.
The win improved the Hornets' record versus HOIC competition to 27 victories to just one defeat. They also maintained possession the McLean County traveling trophy.
