EUREKA - Heart of Illinois Conference host Eureka was held in check in a 10-0 loss to Deer Creek-Mackinaw Tuesday at the middle school.
Chiefs' starter Tyah Seling, who had an earned run average (ERA) of over 14 in three appearances against the Hornets (7-6, 1-3), held the hosts to four hits. She needed only 61 pitches to record 21 outs. Of those 21 outs, eight were in the air via pop out and fly ball.
“It’s lunging forward because their pitcher is not throwing as hard as we’re used to seeing,” explained Eureka coach John Stromberger. “We were not able to adjust. We were not trying to hit fly balls on purpose. We were just out on our front foot.”
Morgan Greene had one of the four hits for the hosts, all of which were singles.
Tablesetter Joanna Henderson had two doubles and a triple and drove in three runs for the Chiefs (6-9, 2-3).
Notes: Due to the snow that fell on Sunday, the game was moved back from Monday to Tuesday. The Hornets had outscored DCM 38 to five over the previous three meetings (two conference games, one regional contest) and tripled them in hits at 36 to 12. Entering the game, Eureka was plus-seven in run differential, while the Chiefs were minus-40.
