PEOTONE - Fieldcrest will compete for a sectional championship after a 49-41 win over Westmont Tuesday evening.
The Knights (22-9) converted just six of 27 field goals (22 percent) in the first half, but fortunately was very much in the game, as they were only down 20-16 at intermission.
“We were pretty gosh darn optimistic at halftime,” stated Fieldcrest coach Matt Winkler. “We came in very positive. We did not play our best basketball. We knew that. We shot the ball awful.”
Their defense held the Sentinels (25-7) without a basket over a nine-minute stretch of the second half, as the Knights led by many as 11.
Derek May's 17 points paced Fieldcrest, while Caden Anderson tallied nine for Westmont.
The Knights return to action Friday at 7 p.m. to face the winner of Wednesday's game between Chicago Corliss and El Paso-Gridley (22-9).
Notes: According to Winkler, if EP-G is able to advance, a petition would be drafted and sent to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) headquarters in Bloomington to try to get the all-Heart of Illinois Conference battle moved from Peotone to somewhere in this area. Fieldcrest went 16 of 20 at the charity stripe.
