ROANOKE - Games tipped off around the Tri-County Conference on Friday night. At Dick Broers Gymnasium, Roanoke-Benson defeated Putnam County 53-38.
The Rockets (4-1) held a 30-20 lead at halftime and an 11-2 flurry boosted their advantage to 41-22 midway through the third period.
According to R-B coach Abe Zeller, one surge would probably put the game away.
"That was the number thing we talked about," commented Zeller in regard to his halftime message. "We did not have any good third quarters at the EP-G (El Paso-Gridley) tournament. I thought our guys did a good job staying focused and bringing energy."
Jake Weber paced all scorers with 21 points, as the hosts made their seven field goal attempts, with at least one from each of the five starters. It was also the Rockets' home opener.
Luke Carlson was the high scorer at 13 points for the Panthers, whose record is 0-6.
Notes: R-B shot 13 of 21 for 62 percent in the first half compared to eight of 19 for Putnam County. The guests did not fare much better over the second 16 minutes, as they converted just five of 25. The Rockets were nine of 24 in the second half and finished 22 of 45 overall for 49 percent.
