REGIONAL BALL

GOING FULL STEAM – Maddie Monge of Roanoke-Benson heads down the floor during Monday’s game with Elmwood. Monge scored 14 points, but the Rockets lost 52-35 (For the Journal/Ben Aldrich).

ROANOKE - One good half of basketball was negated by a subpar half for Roanoke-Benson in a 52-35 defeat to Elmwood in Monday's regional at Dick Broers Gymnasium.

The Rockets (6-18) led 26-21 at intermission, but were outscored 31 to nine by the Trojans (12-18) in the second half.

“That’s a sign of our season,” Rockets’ coach Todd Nafziger said. “We started the first three minutes of the third quarter with three turnovers. Experienced teams do not do that. We’re young and inexperienced. We have a lot of underclass kids we play because we do not have the numbers. We talked about how important the first three minutes of the third quarter were.”

R-B received 14 points from Maddie Monge, while Montana Ledbetter netted 20 for Elmwood.

Notes: Through two seasons of varsity ball, Monge has scored 709 points. She should reach 1,000 sometime next year.
