PONTIAC - Both Eureka and Fieldcrest saw their seasons ended Tuesday in regional competition. The Hornets lost 22-25, 25-22, 25-15 to Heart of Illinois Conference rival El Paso-Gridley, while the Knights dropped a 25-17, 28-26 to the host Indians.

The Hornets (19-15) provided a much tougher challenge than the previous match with the Titans (27-5), who swept their guests in two at 25-18, 25-14 nearly four weeks ago.

“We played them in early October and they made a lot of errors,” pointed out Eureka coach Lena Dohner of her squad’s performance. “We watched the video. We were ready. They came out fired up and ready to go.”

Joan Zimmerman registered 10 kills for Eureka, while EP-G received a match-high 19 from 6-foot outside hitter Madi Funk.

In the nightcap, Fieldcrest (21-14) held a 23-21 lead in the second set, but was unable to force further play.

“We had a chance, but it was not like we were pulling away,” commented Knights’ coach Cathy Sanders. “The chance was there, but on both sides.”

Brooke Fox paced the Indians (15-14) with nine kills, which was the same total for Fieldcrest's Gracie Schultz.
