Explore Sugar Grove

Family Nature Exploration Day will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Sugar Grove Nature Center at Funks Grove near Shirley. The free event includes a guided hike at 11 a.m., animal feeding at 1 p.m., and make-and-take craft. Dickson Mounds Museum archaeologist Alan Harn will present a free lecture, "Six Hundred Generations There: Changes in the Land and Human Settlement Evolution at the Emiquon Wildlife Complex" at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in the Illinois State Museum Dickson Mounds auditorium. Excavations at the Morton site, now a part of the developing Emiquon Preserve, have located 29 mortuary sites and 129 habitation areas featuring examples of every prehistoric culture identified in the region. More than 30 archaeological excavations have been carried out at these locations, from 1930 to the present. 309-547-3721.

Zoo Stampede

Register now for the Miller Park Zoological Society's 15th annual Miller Park Zoo Stampede on March 3. This 5K run, 3K walk and ¼-mile fun run for children 10 and under is the first race on the Lake Run Club circuit for the year. The 5K race starts at 10 a.m., followed by the 3K stroll. The first 200 registered 5K and 3K participants will receive a T-shirt. The ¼-mile fun run starts at 9:30 a.m. and everyone receives a medal. Stampede registration can be completed online at www.mpzs.org. Fee for the 5K/3K is $20, with a $2 discount for registrations received by Feb. 12. The ¼-mile fun run fee is $5. Check-in and same-day registration is from 8 to 9:15 a.m. race day at the park pavilion. 309-434-2243.
