When your shower drain becomes clogged, your first instinct might be to reach for a chemical clog remover—until you read the safety warnings on the back of the bottle. Chemical clog removers don’t just pose a threat to your safety, but can also eat away at your pipes over time. Here are two simple ways to unclog your shower drain naturally.

1) Use a Hook Catcher Tool

If you have long hair or frequently shave in the shower, a buildup of hair may be the cause of your clog. The most effective way to remove the clog is by using a plastic hook catcher that can be fed into your drain, then pulled out along with the debris. This method is not for the faint of heart, and pulling six months of your hair out of the drain could give you a nightmare or two. However, at under $7 for a three pack of these clog removing tools, it’s a cost-effective way to clean your shower drain without using harmful chemicals.

2) Baking Soda and Vinegar

The humble baking soda and vinegar combination is actually a cleaning powerhouse. To unclog your drain with this non-toxic method, remove your drain plug and pour a pot of boiling hot water down your drain slowly.

Then, dump a half cup of baking soda into the drain. Let the baking soda sit for several minutes, then pour a cup of concentrated vinegar and another cup of hot water on top of the baking soda. Quickly replace your drain plug to keep the baking soda and vinegar reaction contained below the surface.

Let the mixture sit for ten minutes, then flush again with a pot of boiling water. While you’re technically creating a chemical reaction to clear the clog, you won’t have to worry about calling the poison control center if this mixture comes into contact with your skin.
