1952: Russia's First Medal

Russian track and field athlete Nina Romaschkova made history in 1952 when she threw a discus 51.42 meters at the Helsinki Olympic Games, beating the previous record and becoming the first Soviet competitor to win an Olympic gold medal. The athlete is perhaps equally remembered for the diplomatic crisis she caused when she was caught shoplifting from a London boutique.
