BLOOMINGTON - A Bloomington man was hospitalized after he was beaten in his apartment Sunday morning by a second man in a dispute over a woman both men were dating, police said.
Jay R. Schweitzer, 34, of Willedrob Road, was arrested and charged with home invasion in the attack on James Bateman, 36, of Yotzonot Drive. Bateman was in stable condition Monday afternoon at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, a hospital official said.
Assistant State's Attorney Mark Messman said in court Monday that Bateman was unable to talk to police following the attack that allegedly started while Bateman was in his own bed.
Schweitzer is being denied bail on a motion by Messman, in which the prosecutor said Bateman's injuries were life-threatening.
Messman said the two men and the woman they were both dating were at a bar earlier in the night, and the three went their separate ways.
Schweitzer called the woman's home, and assumed she was at Bateman's home because she did not answer, he said.
Schweitzer broke through the entry door to the apartment and then Bateman's bedroom door, Messman said.
Bloomington Police spokesman Dave White said the incident began about 5:30 a.m. when the woman involved heard a loud noise and recognized Schweitzer's voice.
After meeting Schweitzer in a stairwell, the woman hid in the bathroom and heard the struggle, he said.
