PONTIAC - Three people are facing more than 16 charges after police said they broke into a couple's apartment and beat them.
Robert Steel, 19, Demetrious Steel, 17, and Shaunna M. Stout, 22, all of Pontiac, each face 13 counts of home invasion, which carries a possible sentence of six to 60 years in prison. The trio was in Livingston County court Tuesday to face those and other charges related to the incident, which happened around 3 p.m. Monday.
A male juvenile also faces charges in the case.
Assistant State's Attorney Carey Luckman said Stout drove the Steel brothers and the juvenile to the Phoenix Apartments in Pontiac, where her ex-boyfriend lives with his present girlfriend. Stout parked her car nearby, and the three males went into the apartment, Luckman said.
The brothers and juvenile are accused of entering the apartment and threatening the woman. They chased her into a back room, where they threatened her with a club and a sharp object, and demanded money, Luckman said.
After a few minutes, the male resident arrived at the apartment, and the brothers and juvenile hit him repeatedly, Luckman said. After the man broke free, the three ran out of the apartment to Stout in the waiting car, Luckman said.
While Stout was trying to drive off, her car hit the male apartment resident, Luckman said.
Pontiac police said the victims' injuries were not serious.
Alerted by a neighbor, police stopped Stout near 4-H Park, which is about a mile from the apartment complex.
The victims reported a cell phone was stolen from the apartment. Police have recovered a battery for the phone.
Police also reported finding about 34 grams of marijuana in the car.
Luckman said the incident may have started over racial comments. Stout said in court that her ex-boyfriend said "stuff" about her current boyfriend, Demetrious Steel.
Stout is being charged based on her accountability because she drove the men to house, authorities said.
She also faces two counts of mob action, two counts of adding a fugitive, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of cannabis and reckless driving. Stout was jailed at Livingston County jail in lieu of posting $5,000.
Robert and Demetrious Steel also face charges of mob action, armed robbery, theft, and unlawful possession of marijuana. Both men were jailed in lieu of posting $20,000.
A fifth person, who was in the car, faces charges not involved directly with the incident.
