CLINTON — No injuries are being reported in a fire that appears to have destroyed a two-story building on Clinton's eastern edge.
Seven area fire departments assisted the Clinton Fire Department as they battled the blaze that spread quickly through an apartment complex late Friday afternoon.
The engulfed section is a two-story addition to a one-story complex. It has a "For Rent" sign out front.
One of the residents, Robert Mandrell, said he and his fiancee ''were just chilling'' when someone pounded on his apartment door and yelled "Fire." Mandrell opened the door to smoke and found "all flames" outside.
About 10 units appeared to be in the building, an older structure near the 1500 block of East Illinois 54.
"No one is still inside that we know of,'' said Clinton Fire Chief Shawn Melton.
He added the bitter cold — single-digit temperatures — and wind made fighting the blaze difficult.
