BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington police officer followed a DUI suspect who ran into a back yard Thursday night. When the officer entered the yard, he didn't see the man.
Then he saw a big grill. The officer pulled the top up and found a 5-foot-11-inch, 185-pound man lying atop the grill's racks, hiding where burgers usually reside.
The chase began when officers saw a car tailgating other cars and crossing the center line about 6:50 p.m. on West Wood Street, police said. The officer tried to stop the car after it turned north on Allin Street and didn't stop properly where Allin meets MacArthur Street and Oakland Avenue.
The car stopped quickly, and the driver ran, police said. An officer followed him in a squad car until the man ran into a yard in the 800 block of West Washington Street, police said.
Ray Stephens, 18, was found in the grill, police said.
Stephens, of the 700 block of West Orlando Avenue in Normal, was booked into jail on charges of illegal consumption and possession of liquor by a minor, resisting a police officer, possession of marijuana and driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
A jail official said he was arrested on a warrant on a charge of manufacture and delivery of cocaine.
