LINCOLN — A former Chester-East Lincoln Elementary School track coach was sentenced to jail and probation for having a sexual relationship with a teenage girl.

Thomas J. Gallagher, 22, of the 200 block of Nugent Place, Lincoln, was sentenced Tuesday to 180 days in jail and 48 months of probation, according to the Logan County circuit clerk’s office.

He had pleaded guilty last month to one count of criminal sexual abuse of a victim 13 to 16 years old, a Class 2 felony, according to court records. A second count had been dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Gallagher resigned last winter as a track and basketball coach. The six-month relationship with the girl started shortly after he resigned, prosecutors said.

State police arrested Gallagher June 3 during a traffic stop on Tiffany Avenue in Epperson Addition. The girl was with him in the car, police said.
