Pontiac

City takes 1st stepsfor land annexation

Key action: Took first steps to annex a two-acre piece of land just east of Pontiac Junior High School. The land is owned by the city, but is not within the city limits. The annexation will allow the city access to more land, which would be mostly surrounded by the city on the south side of Ill. Route 116.

Other action: Referred petitions to build a Wal-Mart Supercenter on the west side of Pontiac to the city's planning and zoning board. The council needs to approve annexing land, zoning changes and other qualifications so the building can be constructed.

COLFAX

Village board eyesending leaf burning

Meeting: Village board

When: Dec. 5

Key action: Discussed leaf burning and the concerns of health issues. Village attorney Tom Shields will draft an ordinance that will be more specific on banning leaf burning.

Other action: Requested ESDA director Randy Clark provide protocol for emergency procedures before the board will approve purchasing generators.

FARMER CITY

City residents will pay lower taxes

Meeting: City Council

When: Dec. 5

Key issue: Approved a tax levy of $292,360, which is significantly less than last year's $383,235 because bonds for the sewer plant will be paid off later this month. City Manager David Joswiak said a property owner paying about $2,000 in real estate taxes will save about $120.

Other issues: Provena EMS Systems will visit with city officials Thursday regarding problems in staffing the local ambulance service.

HEYWORTH

Sunday alcohol salesset for March ballot

When: Dec. 5

Key action: Voted to place two advisory referenda on the March ballot concerning the sale of alcohol in the village on Sundays. One referendum will ask if the village should allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in the original package and not for consumption on licensed premises on Sundays, while the other will ask if the village should allow the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on licensed premises on Sundays. Currently, alcohol sales of any kind are prohibited on Sundays.

Other action: Heard an update from AmerenCILCO about frequent power outages in the village. Officials said they have done a complete check of the transmission system to the village and performed necessary repairs. Installation of a secondary line to provide power to the village in case the main line goes down are likely a few years away, AmerenCILCO officials said.

EL PASO

Water, sewer rates increase by 2.7%

Meeting: City Council

When: Dec. 5

Key action: Approved an ordinance to increase water and sewer rates by 2.7 percent. The proposal will raise water rates by 44 cents per 1,000 gallons and will be reflected in the February water bill.

Other action: Approved a motion to advertise for bids for the west-side sewer project. The project will install a lift station sewer line to a pump station on the west side of Ill. Route 251.
