WHEATON - A 17-year-old high school student has pleaded not guilty to charges of solicitation of murder and intimidation in an alleged school shooting plot.
Matthew Balman of Bensenville was accused last month of planning a school shooting at Fenton High School. He was arrested May 8 after students told school officials they overheard him telling others not to come to school the next day.
Balman entered his plea Monday in DuPage County Court. Assistant Public Defender Jeffrey York also received approval from Judge George Bakalis to have the teen undergo a mental health assessment "to see if he suffers from any type of mental illness and needs a course of treatment."
Prosecutors have said Balman planned to provoke police into killing him at the school.
Balman was suspended from Fenton High School after he was charged. He is being held in DuPage County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond and could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
