Hockey name up for a vote

BLOOMINGTON - Five choices remain for the name of the Bloomington hockey team and you have until 5 p.m. Friday to cast your vote at the Coliseum website.

The United Hockey League team will take the ice next fall at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The team's moniker could be the 66ers, Bolts, Bullfrogs, Firestorm or Prairie Thunder.

A panel that selected the name tried to find those that would be a strong, unique name in the league and still be family friendly, said Jonell Kehias, marketing services manager for The Pantagraph, which is cosponsoring the contest. The panel included workers from The Pantagraph and Central Illinois Arena Management, which manages the Coliseum.

The choices reflect the Bloomington-Normal area, she added.

"We also wanted something that had great art application for the jerseys," Kehias said. "Bolts of lightning make for a fun graphic and Firestorm is just a cool name."

Bullfrogs was added because the panel wanted an animal unique to the hockey league, Kehias said.

More than 2,300 entries were submitted to the contest, said Beau Bradle, director of sales and marketing for the Coliseum managers.

"It is very encouraging for the team to have that many people interested in naming the team and in hockey," Bradle said.

Once duplicate names were sorted out, Bradle said the panel narrowed a list of 836 names to five.

Originally, the panel planned to narrow the list to three, but Bradle said it was hard to trim the list so five were chosen instead.

A team name will be announced at the end of the month, Bradle said. No specific date for an announcement has been made.

Votes on the team name may be placed at the coliseum website at www.uscellularcoliseum.com.
