KEOKUK, IOWA - One man was electrocuted and his friend, an Illinois man, was arrested after they tried to steal copper wire from an abandoned building, police said.
Police and fire crews responded to a report of someone being shocked at the building, Keokuk Police Chief Tom Crew said.
Matt Ackley, 20, of Keokuk, was found injured and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Crew said. He said Ackley may have come in contact with a fuse box during the alleged break-in early Saturday morning.
"Apparently they had entered the building to steal copper wire and Ackley made contact with a live power source,'' Crew said.
Ackley's friend, Robert Gillham, 27, of Carthage, Ill., was charged with third-degree burglary. He remained held Wednesday in the Lee County jail on $9,750 bond.
