LeROY - Quick-thinking employees used their cell phones to call for help after a robber locked them in a cooler at McDonald's when they reported to work Friday morning.
No one was hurt, and the robber got away before police arrived.
LeRoy Police Chief Gordon Beck was in Champaign on a criminal case late Friday night, but LeRoy police could not confirm reports it was in connection with this robbery.
Champaign police reportedly took a man, woman and girl from the Red Roof Inn about 6:50 p.m. Friday after the three barricaded themselves in a room. Champaign Police Chief R.T. Finney told Champaign media outlets his department was assisting the LeRoy and Mahomet police departments in an investigation.
Jack Millan, owner of the restaurant in LeRoy, said the robber shut workers in the walk-in cooler before telling the manager to open the safe.
"The night shift had followed the protocol and made the deposits, so the only thing in the safe was the backup change," Millan said.
"We are very fortunate no one was hurt," Millan said. "No one was hurt. No one was touched. The people are what's important; insurance covers everything else."
Millan said the employees were a little rattled but overall were dealing with it well.
