BLOOMINGTON — Winter doesn't have to be bleak or boring.

The Bloomington Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department will host a winter carnival from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Free events are planned at Pepsi Ice Center, Miller Park and Highland Golf Course.

"People of all ages can come out and have family time at any location," said parks program manager Joyce McKeon. "Be sure to bundle up and get ready to have some fun."

Miller Park will offer activities — from sled races and ice fishing to broomball and igloo building — starting at 1 p.m.

Highland Golf Course will offer sledding on the golf course from 1 to 3 p.m., with free inner tubes available.

Pepsi Ice Center will have an open skate from 12:50 to 1:50 p.m. with $1 off admission. The Figure Skating Club will provide demonstrations, games and a free learn-to-skate class during the public open skate.

The Illinois State University hockey team will play at U.S. Cellular Coliseum at 1 p.m. The Bloomington Thunder, a United Hockey League team, will play at 7 p.m.

Indoor activities also are planned. Visit www.bpard.org or call 309-434-2260.
