NORMAL — Food services and drinking fountains will be back in service Thursday at several Illinois State University buildings that had been under a boil order following a water main problem.
ISU spokesman Eric Jome said the boil order was lifted at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Among buildings affected were Metcalf Laboratory School, the Bone Student Center and Milner Library.
Metcalf was open Wednesday, with bottled water for drinking and hand sanitizer in the restrooms, Jome said. Food was prepared off-site and brought in for students, he said.
The student center and library remained open while repairs were made, but restaurants and other food services closed, and restrooms were unavailable until water service was restored.
Steve Gerdes, Normal water director, said repairs to the main at Mulberry and School streets were completed and water service was restored about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Gerdes said a maintenance worker for an apartment building hit a fire hydrant late last week. When town employees excavated the area to repair the hydrant around noon Tuesday, removal of the dirt apparently loosened a valve, causing it to come off, Gerdes explained.
That left a hole in the 20-inch main, sending water into the surrounding streets and sidewalks, he said.
