ELLSWORTH — Donald D. Evans, 87, of Ellsworth, passed away at 11:02 p.m. Friday (June 14, 2019) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Heyworth Christian Church, Heyworth with David O'Neall and Pastor Peter Hopkins officiating. Interment will be in Dawson Cemetery, Ellsworth, with military rites accorded.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, LeRoy is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Dawson Cemetery or the Heyworth Christian Church.
Mr. Evans was born Oct. 31, 1931 in Arrowsmith to Wilkins “Jack" and Floss Sutton Evans. He married Lois Kaufman May 21, 1960 in Heyworth. She survives in Ellsworth.
Also surviving is one daughter, Janine “Jan” Evans of Bloomington and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Edgar Lee Evans and James Evans.
He was an avid baseball fan and signed to play third base with the Washington Senators in 1952.
Don was a United States Army veteran and served from 1952 to 1954 as a military police officer in Linz, Austria.
He served as the Dawson Township Road Commissioner for four terms. He managed the Ellsworth Grain Co. from 1974 to 1982. He was a Realtor from 1982 to 2005.
Don was a member of the Heyworth Christian Church where he served as a deacon and trustee. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 1244, Ellsworth, and a fireman for the Ellsworth Fire Department. He also served on the Dawson Cemetery Board of Directors.
Don was much loved and will be greatly missed.
