BLOOMINGTON — An April 15 jury trial has been set for a rural McLean County man charged with animal cruelty in the deaths of more than 60 cats and a dozen dogs found by police responding to a domestic dispute in November.

Curtis Cleary, 30, is charged with animal cruelty, a felony, and also aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated domestic battery and possession of a firearm without a firearm owner’s identification card. The charges relate to the domestic dispute with a woman who called police as Cleary allegedly fired shots at her.

The case has sparked outrage from animal rights activists who claim animals were starved on the property that once housed an animal shelter.
