BLOOMINGTON — McLean County prosecutors say a 23-year-old Bloomington man demanded money from a 16-year-old girl, sexually assaulted her, insisted she send nude pictures and videos of herself, and then threatened to rape her family if she didn’t give him more money.
Andrew Whitmer, of the 1400 block of Butchers Lane, was arrested Tuesday morning and formally charged Wednesday with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Whitmer is jailed in lieu of posting $100,035 bond.
Whitmer appeared before Judge David Butler via a video link from the McLean County jail. According to a probable cause statement read by Assistant State’s Attorney Jacob Harlow, Whitmer used social media to message the girl around Thanksgiving, asking for money. That progressed to asking for sex, which the girl agreed to on several occasions, according to the statement. Whitmer then began requesting nude photos and videos of the girl, and told her not to tell anyone since he did not want to return to jail.
He also told the girl he would break into her house and rape her family members if she stopped giving him money. It is not known how much money she allegedly gave to Whitmer.
Prosecutors said Whitmer served time in prison for a 2015 residential burglary conviction and has several pending traffic charges, including driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident, which were filed two weeks ago.
Charges could be added pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation into the pornography possession and residential burglary cases, Harlow said.
Butler said he felt the bond amount was appropriate because of the nature of the charges and three previous charges of failure to appear in court.
Whitmer's next court appearance is Feb. 2.
