BLOOMINGTON — A Chenoa man accused of killing his girlfriend’s child was in court Friday for a hearing to review the status of his case.
David Gharrett faces first-degree murder charges in the April 29 death of 3-year-old Destiny Cox.
Police said Gharrett initially claimed he dropped the child in the bathtub after she vomited while eating hot peppers. He later admitted to throwing the child into the tub after he “flew off the handle,” according to prosecutors.
An autopsy listed severe head trauma as the cause of the child’s death.
The 23-year-old suspect was home alone with the child when the incident occurred on April 28, said police.
Defense lawyer Ron Lewis said subpoenas are pending for tapes of the 911 call.
A June 9 hearing is scheduled for further review of the case.
