NORMAL — A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were arrested early Wednesday after initial reports indicated they struck a woman and tried to steal her car before fleeing from police on foot in the Amanda Brooke Apartments area.

Normal police were called about 7 p.m. Tuesday to the apartment complex at 1402 E. College Ave. after callers reported seeing the incident in a parking lot, police said.

The woman, who was not injured, was acquainted with the two, police said.

Kemondrae King, 19, of the 1300 block of Hershey Road, is charged with robbery, aggravated battery and theft. He was jailed in lieu of posting $5,035.

According to Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner, King and the teen asked her for a ride, and she gave them one. They then asked her to take them elsewhere and she declined.

They reportedly battered her and kicked her out of her car, police said. A weapon reportedly was implied but not displayed, he said.

They tried to drive off, but saw police arrive, abandoned the car and ran, according to the police report.

King and the boy were taken into custody about 10 p.m. Tuesday in the area of the apartment complex.
